Green Energy Act will cost consumers
Green Energy Act to affect Hydro One customers
The Province is moving ahead with their new Green Energy Act (GEA) as part of their commitment to combat climate change and to drive Ontario's green economy.
Wind installations are facing a 550 meter setback from residences, imposed by the Ministry of the Environment, so it is a virtual certainty that all wind farms will be in Hydro One's service territory and that heavily populated areas will see practically none.
At the moment it also appears that the major portion of costs of "smartening the grid" and building the lines to accommodate renewable energy will fall on customers of Hydro One.
As a result, Hydro One is planning some significant increases in 2010 seasonal customer rates, largely to accommodate their GEA expenditures. Despite FOCA's suggestion that this initiative yields very broad societal benefit, it does not appear the Province is interested in sharing these infrastructure costs across all Ontario power consumers.
