FOCA is pleased to announce the May 17 release of the State of Ontario's Biodiversity Report 2010 (SOBR) and hope this important information provides a call to action for waterfront property owners, and all Ontarians.
The report chronicles 29 key indicators and is a sobering update on the impacts that humans are having on Ontario's biological backbone. The UN has declared 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity; the Ontario implications are spelled out in a recent posting from the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario. The SOBR is part of Ontario's commitment to understand and communicate the state of our province's ecological health, and to motivate action to protect it.
FOCA is one of 23 representatives from industry, community groups, academia and government that make up the Ontario Biodiversity Council. The report shows many key indicators of biological health are in decline and also documents our lack of solid understanding and data for many more. A brief summary on the state of Ontario's Biodiversity produced by the Council can be found here.
The positive parts of the report relate to the increased interest of Ontarians to do something about the decline of nature and these life support systems that sustain us. FOCA and our member communities have a strong interest, and an important role in protecting important waterfront and near-shore environments. The Docktalk series of environmental fact sheets, videos and other resources can help waterfront property owners to live more lightly on this planet, and do their part to sustain the important web of life that surrounds us and that supports our very existence.
